The Bombay High Court had, on May 4, while upholding the trial court’s sentence awarding life imprisonment to 12 accused in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case, had set aside the acquittal of seven others which included policemen and doctors.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court’s Vacation bench of Justices A.K.Sikri and Deepak Gupta, disagreed with one of the convicted policemen, IPS Officer, R.S.Bhagora, that his plea for stay on his conviction merited urgent hearing because he would lose his job in the meantime.

The bench said in its order: “There is no urgency in this matter. List in the second week of July, 2017.”

Aniruddha Deshmukh, Advocate, appeared for Bhagora. None appeared for CBI, the respondent.
